Any motorcycle dealer cringes at the very thought of it: custom motorcycles. Harley dealers have no problem with you adding some ape hangers or custom rims to your hog but don't dare let them know that you were considering anything more than that. Such people despise the idea of custom choppers because it forces them to admit one very important but real fact: the designers at all of the big name manufacturers like Honda, Kowasaki, and Harley Davidson seem to lack the imagination of people like Jesse James and the boys at Orange County Choppers. This imaginative spirit cannot be faked with some chrome or any fancy saddle bag because custom motorcycles are
What the custom shops do for motorcycles cannot be duplicated in any factory. Rather than a mere machine, they transform it instead into a veritable work of art. Yes, they do add on the custom chrome, the rims, and generally turn the tank into an expression of the motorcycle's soul. And yes, it does have a soul because like the rider, there is but one of its kind. Though Harley owners have for years created custom choppers by extending the rakes and painting their tanks, this is not the same as the bikes being made in the custom shops so popularized in recent years by shows by Jesse James and Orange County Choppers. Such artists understand the Zen of the custom motorcycle and as such design and build their machines from scratch and remind us all of why America fell in love with the motorcycle in the first place: freedom. The freedom to express who you are with the machines and toys we have is indeed an American birthright and that just is something that no rice burner or off-the-shelf Harley can deliver upon.
